CHUMS
stands for Children's Hope for Understanding
Multiple Sclerosis. CHUMS is a national
nonprofit organziation designed to enhance awareness and comprehension
levels of children whose lives are affected by MS.
CHUMS
is the only multiple sclerosis based non-profit organization
in the United States that focuses on supporting a child's need
to understand the disease. Life-changing diseases, like MS,
can be a scary and difficult thing to explain to a child - especially
if you don't really understand it yourself.
CHUMS
believes that
the
adult figure in the child's life is his/her best hope for understanding
multiple sclerosis so some practical ways to begin talking about
this complicated disease are provided throughout the site -
particularly in the CHUMS
Activities section.
Even if
your children are very young and you feel that now may not be
the most appropriate time to tell them about the disease, you
will have to tell them someday. Don't wait to prepare yourself.
The communication techniques offered by CHUMS will help
you in every relationship in your life: co-workers, friends,
near and distant family members. They are all important to you
- don't doubt for a second that you are just as important to
them.
